The Radio Adelaide team is gearing up for the 2012 Womadelaide Festival. Stay tuned here for news, broadcast details and preview interviews.

In the meantime, let’s get to know some of the artists appearing at this year’s fest. First Up:

First Aid Kit

Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg strike clean harmonies atop simple guitar, autoharp and keyboards. Their debut album, The Big Black & The Blue, released when Klara was aged 17 and Johanna 19, earned inclusion on several influential ‘best of 2010’ lists. Have a listen:

It’s been another great year for the community and Indigenous radio team backstage at the Womadelaide festival at Botanic Park, Adelaide.

Fado has national status in Portugal: it is the music that represents the Portuguese spirit. Ana Moura has produced several CDs of fado from Lisbon – the third of which hit platinum status. With a brilliant characteristic backing group of Portuguese guitar, guitar and bass, she charmed audiences at WOMADelaide 2011.

Roger Holdsworth talked with her about her music and about the challenges between traditional and developing fado.

Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonzalez is probably best known as the man who put together the Buena Vista Social Club back in the mid-90s – finding those great old Cuban musicians, and encouraging them out of retirement for one last blast of international fame.

He was also the founder of the well-known Cuban band Sierra Maestra, and currently leads the Afro-Cuban All-Stars – a cross-generational band that features some of the best veteran players, alongside the most talented younger musicians in Cuba today.

Day 4 of Womadelaide is here and after 4 or so years of working on our broadcast at the festival I always walk away with many lessons. The artists that perform at this festival are so diverse and wonderful and the ones that I remember the most are those that have the courage, strength and drive to pursue their passion. Whether it be their musical, cultural, social or political passion – the artists that have the most effect are those that show the most passion for what they do.

The beauty in a festival like this is the opportunity to be challenged. You can hear and see things that you might not necessarily understand or even like, but you are given the opportunity to explore new sounds, sights and to challenge your perceptions of cultures. If this is done with passion and authenticity there is always something to learn from these experiences.

Womadelaide – here is my challenge to you. Never forget to challenge your audiences because it is in being challenged that we as a culture and as a global society can truly learn to grow.

Thank you Womadelaide for another beautiful, challenging and inspiring year. Now to go listen and see something new while I still can.

Sidestepper is a unique musical project that brings together UK producer/DJ Richard Blair with some of Colombia’s hottest musicians. Originally a studio creation, it’s since evolved into a full band, with traditional South American cumbia and salsa rhythms rubbing shoulders with the latest electronic beats.

Richard Blair stopped into our backstage studio here at Womadelaide to discuss the group’s history with Seth Jordan.

Amadou & Mariam – Womadelaide 2011 LIVE! – Onsite interview

Mali’s husband-and-wife team Amadou & Mariam are probably the best-known couple in Africa these days. While both of these talented musicians are blind, that certainly hasn’t stopped them from establishing themselves as one of the most in-demand World music acts performing today.

Their combination of traditional Bambara rhythms with Amadou’s sparkling guitar work and his tight vocal duets with Mariam, makes for an exciting mix.

What an awesome day, the weather was nice and cool… the day started of with watching awesome sounds of Archie Roach, he sang songs written by his wife and soul mate Ruby Hunter.. The grounds were also alive with the beats of the parade cruising past the tent, I saw a man riding a giant monkey and the PNG dance group dropped into to say hello, as the sun was setting the Whitireia perfoming school of arts showed off their fine dancing skills to the crowd on stage 2..
